Senior Frontend Engineer Interview Experience - United States

July 1, 2023
Neutral ExperienceNo Offer

Process

Applied online.

Interview Process:

  • Initial recruiter phone call
  • Technical screen: Javascript function-based, solving an algorithm-type question.
  • Half-day of interviews, including:
    • React coding question
    • Behavioral questions about work experience
    • Javascript class-based question
    • System design interview

Reason for not receiving an offer:

  • Didn't ask clarifying questions on requirements (fair criticism).
  • Didn't cover enough edge cases in Javascript classes. (In a 45-minute interview, I was rushing to remember how to do classes and just get it done).
  • Was expected to know more about backend/infrastructure from a system design perspective. The task was to build a retry job system (DB, queue, infra), which was odd considering this was for a frontend role.

The people were extremely nice throughout the process. I just think some of their questions were not completely relevant to being a frontend-focused engineer in 2023.

Questions

Technical screen:

  • JavaScript skills-based React coding question
  • JavaScript classes

System design:

  • How to design a retry job process to ingest data, including the various resources one could use (DB, queue, etc.)
