Description For Operating Engineer

KDDI America, a subsidiary of the Fortune Global 500 KDDI Group, is seeking an Operating Engineer for their New York facility. This role is crucial in maintaining and operating the physical infrastructure of our data centers and facilities.

As an Operating Engineer, you'll be responsible for the operation and repair of all physical equipment during your assigned shift. You'll develop and implement procedures for various critical systems, including fire safety, HVAC, electrical, and emergency backup systems. Your expertise will be vital in ensuring the continuous and efficient operation of our facilities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Operating and maintaining complex mechanical and electrical systems
  • Performing preventive maintenance and troubleshooting issues
  • Monitoring and adjusting critical systems to ensure optimal performance
  • Coordinating with contractors and managing tenant construction projects
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and regulations
  • Responding to customer requests and maintaining detailed logs of all work

We're looking for a skilled professional with:

  • Refrigeration Engineer License (unlimited capacity) from NYC/FDNY
  • Q01/Q99 certification
  • Universal technician certification from EPA
  • Strong technical knowledge of HVAC, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • Ability to read and interpret complex technical information
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Responsibilities For Operating Engineer

  • Operate and repair all physical equipment on assigned shift
  • Develop improvement procedures for fire systems, life safety systems, critical mechanical and electrical systems, plumbing, HVAC systems, emergency back-up systems, and lighting
  • Coordinate tenant construction projects and supervise contractors in absence of department manager
  • Provide grounds maintenance when appropriate
  • Maintain and operate snow plowing and grounds equipment
  • Log UPS, PDU and chiller plant readings
  • Provide customers with rack power usage and assist with customer work orders
  • Prioritize tasks from customer or internal requests
  • Implement reliability maintenance procedures
  • Perform tasks safely and maintain a clean environment
  • Learn to operate mechanical and electrical infrastructures remotely using BMS systems
  • Maintain compliance with Federal, State and Local codes, regulations and standards
  • Perform preventative tests and analyze data for proper functioning of all systems
  • Monitor operations and make customer-approved adjustments to various systems
  • Prepare and maintain maintenance logs and reports
  • Coordinate contractor and management approvals for work orders
  • Read and work from complex technical information
  • Interact with all parts of the organization to respond to service requests
  • May be on-call after regular scheduled hours
  • Perform new customer site installs or oversee contractors
  • Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Method of Procedures (MOP) and Emergency Operating Procedures (EOP)
  • Perform preventive maintenance on all base building and critical system equipment
  • Act as a fire warden during scheduled shifts in absence of FSD/DFSD
  • Perform tenant routine work orders
  • Coordinate with outside vendors or contractors
  • Conduct monthly breaker amperage readings, chiller rotations, testing exercises, and facility load transfers

Requirements For Operating Engineer
