This role is integral to Netflix's Cloud Engineering organization, which manages one of the largest Cloud footprints in AWS. The position focuses on building and maintaining compute services that serve as foundational building blocks for Netflix's massive-scale operations.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for evolving large-scale infrastructure systems and creating abstractions that enable a "set it and forget it" approach to achieving scalability and cost efficiency. This role requires expertise in distributed systems, backend services, AWS/cloud, and Kubernetes, combining both technical leadership and hands-on development experience.
Key responsibilities include designing intuitive compute abstractions, mentoring peers, driving operational excellence, and maintaining awareness of industry trends. Responsibilities For Distributed Systems Engineer (L5) - Compute Abstractions
- Work closely with Product and Customers to design experiences that anticipate customers' needs
- Design compute abstractions used by all of engineering
- Mentor peer engineers in building, maintaining, and deploying complex features
- Drive operational excellence on the Abstractions team
- Maintain currency on industry trends for new architectures
- Develop automated systems to test for regressions and performance
Requirements For Distributed Systems Engineer (L5) - Compute Abstractions
- Proven track record of architecting and implementing customer-focused products at 100M+ user scale
- Experience driving wide change at the scale of 100's of engineers
- Experience architecting, implementing, and owning distributed systems at scale of 10's of services
- Seasoned mentor who has helped other engineers learn new professional skills
- Strong focus on building easy to use and maintain systems
- Ability to balance complex customer, engineering, and stakeholder needs
- Self-starter with ability to manage cross-functional projects
- Experience with Kubernetes (nice to have)
- Experience defining compute resources at scale (nice to have)
