Description For Cell Materials Engineer, Electrochemistry

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Cell Materials Engineer specializing in Electrochemistry to join their team. This role will collaborate with multiple teams across Tesla to characterize battery materials, determine degradation mechanisms, and optimize cell performance. The ideal candidate will contribute to battery performance testing and fundamental electrochemical analysis, supporting the development of cell test plans to characterize initial cell performance, lifetime behavior, reliability, and identify critical failures and degradation modes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to understanding lithium-ion battery performance and degradation
  • Determining ideal cell chemistry and design for future products
  • Developing new electrochemical/chemical tests for cell degradation analysis and modeling
  • Interpreting and quantifying degradation modes of various battery chemistries
  • Working with air-sensitive materials using a glove box and/or in a dry room
  • Developing new techniques for analyzing battery materials or parameters

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of experience working with lithium-ion battery technology
  • Familiarity with battery degradation mechanisms and materials
  • Experience with battery cyclers
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, or similar data analysis tools
  • Knowledge of chemical analysis techniques for battery materials
  • Ability to learn new concepts, propose experiments, and work independently
  • Knowledge of EIS interpretation (preferred)
