Description For Mechanical Design Engineer, Exteriors

As a Mechanical Design Engineer of the Exterior Engineering Team at Tesla, you will be responsible for designing, prototyping, validating, releasing, and launching components for current and future vehicle programs. You'll work on complex exterior vehicle systems, including Front & Rear Fascia Assemblies, Underbody, Underhood, and other trim components. Your role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams, utilizing DFSS methodologies, and working closely with suppliers. You'll be part of Tesla's Vehicle Engineering organization, reporting to the Manager of Exterior Engineering Team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Concept engineering and feasibility
  • Packaging and layout within vehicle architecture
  • Design to deliver customer-driven exterior system targets
  • Collaborate with Tesla design/styling studio
  • Detail design including surface development, structures, and GD&T
  • Interpret CAE simulation results
  • Work with suppliers on DFM, MoldFlow, and tooling design
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure manufacturing and assembly feasibility

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Catia V5/V6 experience preferred (other CAD software acceptable)
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals
  • Knowledge of large plastic part design and injection molding
  • Experience with DFSS methodologies
  • Familiarity with technical documents like DFMEAs and DVP&R's
