Laid off

Hello,

I joined Meta at E4 as SWE Specialist. I managed to get GEE at my first performance review, and I got promoted to E5. Then two rounds of layoffs happened, and several reorgs. I started to struggle in my personal life, and work started to go side ways, and I missed some deadlines. This broke relationship with my manager. I had a couple meetings when my manager was shouting at me. My team was also 8-hour timezone shifted, so it was hard for me to find new projects at my level. The priorities shifted after reorgs, and I struggled to catch up on the changes. I also feel like I'm not suitable for specialist position. I'm more of a generalist. Long story short, I was laid off without PIP. I'm feeling really bad about it now, and it hurt my confidence at lot, and I'm still struggling with panic attacks from time to time...

I was recently offered staff level position at a mid-size company. The team is distributed in a very similar timezones - 2 hours difference. I have some technical leadership experience from a startup, but I think it's going to be different than in mid-size company. I don't think it's going to be same as staff at Meta because of the scale of the company. I found out that I'd be the first staff engineer in the org, so even the manager is not clear what the expectations are. I'm sort of second guessing my decision here. Did I make a stupid decision? I don't want to get laid off again. I have also another offer for a senior position at another mid-size company, but the team sounds less interesting. Do you guys have any advice? How do I get back on the horse again? I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I guess I might be looking for some kind of absolution for my sins, so that I can move on... I wish I could start things completely over but life is not a video game... How do I rebuild my reputation?

Sorry to hear about the layoff without PIP - That's a very Meta thing to happen. Getting GEE in your first PSC and speed-running the E5 promotion is extremely impressive: You should be super proud of that!

In short, don't let this experience get to you. It didn't happen because you were a bad engineer; it happened due to circumstances outside of your control. Check out this related thread: "Success story after PIP?"

Meta E5 maps to Staff at the vast majority of companies as the Meta bar is so high. Put the past behind you and keep your head high - You are a new person now! I recommend following the advice from the senior to staff course: Grow From Senior To Staff Engineer: L5 To L6

The mid-level to senior course is also a good refresher (again, FAANG senior maps to staff at most companies): Grow From Mid-Level To Senior Engineer: L4 To L5

As a new staff engineer, your priority is to show that you can build relationships and context quickly. Be the friendliest face in the office and talk to as many people as possible. See how you can help and think in terms of multiplicative impact.

Lastly, congrats on the 2 offers! Most engineers can't even get 1 offer in the current market.

Sorry to hear that. Even though you didn't get a PIP, a lot of the advice about Life After PIP and Interviewing After A PIP will be relevant. Congrats on landing 2 offers already, that is very impressive.

How do I rebuild my reputation?

I don't think you should be concerned about this. You should reframe a layoff as "this wasn't a mutually good fit" rather than "I screwed up." Besides, people have short memories: if you do great work after joining the company, you'll quickly earn trust.

What do I do if I meet my previous co-workers that know I was laid off in the future in a couple of years?

It's quite unlikely, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

If it somehow does, hopefully you have leveled up so much that they won't even care about the person you once were.
