Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience - San Francisco, California

Process

The interview process began with an HR phone screen, followed by a discussion with two executives. This was then followed by a virtual onsite with three additional sessions:

  • A one-hour hands-on coding session where I was asked to build a mobile app, including a very basic extension they requested. I built the mobile app without any issues.
  • A behavioral session with a member of their design team. The designer contacted me on the day of the interview to push back her session by an hour. When we met, she was on a ferry, and there were constant connection issues. Her questions were not very comprehensive and seemed targeted at ascertaining whether I could work independently in a quickly changing environment, which raised definite concerns about their management and whether they had a clear direction for their product.
  • A system design round. This was extremely general and had little connection to the mobile ecosystem on which I work. Again, the interviewer failed to instill confidence in the leadership at the company.

Overall, I was very unimpressed with both the ability of their team to conduct interviews and the competence of the staff in general.
