  1. Middle management and senior management are often disconnected from developers.

  2. A lot of time is often wasted on pointless meetings and calls discussing problems instead of trying to work out solutions after an initial plan is laid out.

  3. Estimations are often inaccurate by a wide margin due to a lack of knowledge, proper planning, or adaptability.

  4. Schedule slippage and client escalations due to management incompetence often result in overtime, weekend work, and working on public holidays to meet deadlines or fight fires without much benefit (aside from cab fare and some food if you're lucky enough to have a project with a decent budget; otherwise, forget about it).

  5. Work-life balance suffering causes employee motivation to plummet and leads to employees looking for projects elsewhere, even leaving the firm.

Advice to Management

Proper planning and estimation, flexibility, and treating employees with dignity will all yield greater productivity than making people work like donkeys.
