Pros

Decent salary.

Benefits were very respectable: good medical, disability, and personal liability insurance.

PTO was great: most major holidays, plus 21 paid vacation days per year (after 4 years of service).

Lots of travel (some may not view this as a positive).

Opportunities to do contractual work for high-profile companies.

Cons

Sweet talkers are favored over technically proficient employees. Aggressive timelines with no overtime pay and a mediocre bonus system are common. Software projects are managed by business analysts instead of software professionals.

Advice to Management

Would you hire a general contractor who had never built a house? Your software project leads should know as much or more about building software as they do about business.
