Advice to Management

Developers are meant to develop, not to write documentation in 30-year-old software which runs on a virtual machine which runs on a virtual machine which runs on a remote computer. I understand security is an important aspect, but do you really not believe in your developers so badly that you force them into counterproductive, time-wasting solutions? Does management really believe that hours logged directly correlate to productivity? Or could it be that I do my job faster than others? "Show me the metrics by which you evaluate me; I'll show you how I behave." I quickly got used to delaying each task to days instead of hours so management would stop calling me unproductive simply because I had completed each task ahead of schedule. Just awful work culture.
