Software Engineer Interview Experience - Amsterdam, North Holland

Process

I got a referral from one of my ex-colleagues and started with a classic initial conversation with two engineers there.

Then I got the HackerRank test, which was so easy. I got a decent score and passed to the next stage, which was all about my HackerRank solutions.

There comes the frustration: Again, two engineers from a different backend team interviewed me for 1 hour. They didn't look like they were familiar with the questions, nor interviewing people.

I re-read my solutions very quickly and spotted my bugs/points. As an interviewee who has had tons of interviews before, I believe that I answered their questions at a very decent level. But when I got the rejection mail, which is okay with feedback attached, I was really surprised that the phrases they didn't contradict or defend and just accepted, they said these are your weak points and you don't have enough skills right now.

So, what is the point of having grumpy, reckless, and careless people as interviewers? Even the SQL question that had only one SELECT statement, they said it was not optimal but without any explanation of how or why.

I'd recommend not taking them very seriously but maybe give it a shot. They look like they don't have the standard or spirit they claimed they have.

Questions

First interview - Some Adyen formula questions. Hackerrank: - LC easy-medium end Java question - Completing some Java classes that need to pass tests (Their tests have really low coverage, so you don't need to fill all classes, but some, which they expect vice-versa. But in terms of Hackerrank, you got 100% score ) - Three SQL questions that were almost all easy. Hackerrank solutions interview: - Why did you do that? - How could you improve?
