Senior Software Test Engineer • Former Employee
Pros: • Limitless resources and budget.
• Frequent social events.
• Amazing coworkers (the ones by your side, not upstairs).
• Ambitious environment (to a fault, though).
• Snacks!
Cons: - USED to be great pay for contractors, now they pay pennies. Literally less than half what it was about 4 years ago.
- You are CONSTANTLY pressured for more, MORE, MOOOOREEEE!!! And then made to feel guilty because you couldn't meet their insane expectations.
- I never left work for the day while at Amazon with a feeling of completion, confidence, satisfaction, or like I had a productive day at all. 100% of the time you are made to feel like you're falling short (because you are!), and that it's your fault and you simply "must not care about your career enough".
- "Dangling the carrot" is a vicious understatement. They hang "blue badge" over your head so heartlessly, the opportunities almost NEVER arise, and they pressure you to take jobs in departments you NEVER wanted to work in, and then again, they PUBLICLY shame you as if you don't care about anything. Yes, publicly, by name.
- Contractors, as far as leadership is concerned, are second class citizens and they will LET YOU KNOW IT (and nothing else, for that matter). You get barred from nearly everything, you're excluded from pretty much anything resembling the rewards they give themselves for a job well done. They just kick you out the door, no "Ship It" plaque for you, no bonus or raise or stocks, nothing to show, and you should "consider yourself lucky you got a free t-shirt and a job at all".
- Lies. Lies, lies, and more lies. Oh, did I mention complete incompetency when it comes to upper-leadership?
- Amazon is years behind the rest of the software industry, don't be fooled. If MS, Google, and other tech giants were a game of Jenga about half-way through, Amazon is like the part of the game where everyone is sweating because they know this thing is going to topple over if a gentle breeze comes through the room.
- There is free booze EVERYWHERE!! Everywhere you look there are bottles of whiskey, vodka, tequila, you name it, just scattered about. Fridges full of every kind of beer and cider, wine, beer taps, EVRYWHERE!! Now while that doesn't sound like a bad thing on paper, in practice, it's HORRIFIC. Amazon knows they have to keep everyone drunk and fed free food because if not, everyone would go insane!! People are always plastered at work, leaving for 2.5 hour lunches, coming back WASTED, and then complain that they have to work over the weekend because we're behind schedule.
- Nice guys finish last, and that is gospel at Amazon. Be a bigger jerk, and people will bow to you. Be cool and loved by your coworkers, and you'll get laid off (FTE).
I could go on for pages....
