Process

Amazon recruiters are the worst.

Every month, four to five different Amazon recruiters email me about opportunities. I decided to respond to one of them as I'm graduating soon. I mentioned to the recruiter that I'm still in university and looking for New Grad/SDE1 opportunities. Despite this explanation, he still sent me an SDE2 OA.

I realized the OA was for SDE2 because after I completed my team matching questionnaire, another recruiter emailed me saying I passed the OA for the SDE2 position. I mentioned to this new recruiter that I'm actually interested in a specific team in the Vancouver office, and my friend had already mentioned me to his manager. After that, this second recruiter passed my application to a third recruiter, claiming he was the one who takes care of Vancouver teams. Well, I scheduled a phone call with this third recruiter, and he mentioned he's only taking care of Toronto teams. I was like, 'What the hell is going on?' So far, I'm not sure if I'm being passed around like a ball in a volleyball tournament or if I'm actually applying for Amazon.

Well, the third recruiter passed me to a fourth recruiter. Just to be sure, I also emailed her, and for three days, I didn't hear back. Then I decided to add and message her through LinkedIn. As soon as I messaged her, I got an email back for a phone call schedule. And guess what I saw next? Her schedule was empty, like a fresh piece of paper.

Why would you waste my three business days if you literally have nothing on your schedule? Do I really need to poke you on a social media app to remind you that you have a candidate waiting for your response? A chicken farm in Texas would have a more professional interview process so far.

At this point, my friend's manager is also annoyed with me because she's waiting for a recruiter to keep in touch with her about my application process. Little did she know that my application is lost in a void. I'm talking to this fourth recruiter, and she's telling me, 'Oh, I'm sorry, I'm only interviewing SDE2 and above, so I will direct you to the person who is recruiting New Grad/SDE1 positions for this team.' And I, and the manager of the team, are still waiting for someone from student program hiring to reach out so we can continue my interview process.

This was the most unprofessional interview process I have ever been through. Wow. I mean, I hear good things from my friend about the work environment and everything for this team, but oh my god, this interview process would drive a sane person insane. Hopefully, the next step of this interview process will change my mind, but I doubt it.

Questions

So far, OA only. The OA was meant for SDE2, even though I'm just an SDE1/New Grad. I still performed fairly.

There was one medium and one hard question. After that, there were system design questions and the classic Amazon LPs.
