Pros

Depending on the team, you can work with many capable people. You get to build experience with designing AWS infrastructure. Amazon is a large company, and there are many fun opportunities for collaboration and sharing.

Cons

Pay can be unfairly low in many cases. I learned later on that my recruiter lied to me during the salary negotiation process.

Leveling is also unfair. I see many insanely capable people siloed into L4 roles when they should be hired at L5 or L6.

The team largely affects experience. Good teams will be amazing; bad teams can be absolutely horrible, especially in organizations that lack several levels of technical leadership.

The internal tools for SDEs do not help build skills that are transferable beyond Amazon. Many of these are internal-only and are built on principles from 2008 that have been otherwise forgotten.

Advice to Management

Your highest priority should be to strive to be the best employer on Earth. If you believe that delivering results or earning trust is more important than employee welfare, then don't be a manager.
