Pros

Potential large impact.

Many great colleagues.

Leadership principles provide a basis for making good decisions.

Cons

Amazon consistently values:

  • Speed over quality
  • Operational effort over reliability
  • Technical debt over discipline
  • Extending rather than refactoring/rebuilding.

Leadership principles can be weaponized to justify bad decisions.

Advice to Management

Shift rewards towards regularization, simplification, and reliability and away from "The Next New Feature The Customer Wants." Lead by showing what can be done.

You'll get more new features faster when you're not building atop barely-maintainable systems.

Ubiquitous 25% on-call time does not mean engineers are staying close to the customer; it means they are struggling to keep the plane flying.

And: It's not Day One anymore -- you've got the cash flow to make long-term, high-risk bets without fear of running out of runway.
