Pros

Get the chance to learn tremendously of AWS and distributed, high-scale system design, operation, and development.

Cons
  1. Team culture across whole CloudWatch is the worst I have ever seen.
  2. A strong blaming attitude.
  3. No sense of teammate cooperation; basically, you are on your own.
  4. There is a strong culture of PIP; the last 10% performers are mostly at risk of being fired.
  5. No knowledge sharing; you are on your own. Why? As if you go down, others will be saved from being PIP.
  6. Everyone is in survival mode.
  7. Most engineers plus managers are not actually enjoying the work. They do not leave simply because there are not many places that can offer as good as Amazon.
  8. Blind respect for senior engineers. Non-senior engineers are in an even harder survival mode.
  9. Promotion of bad engineers, even though they did not do a good job leading the project. Even though they did not provide good impact.
  10. High workload and huge pressure coming from top to bottom on project delivery, even at the expense of threatening people with being at the edge of PIP.
Advice to Management
