Pros
  • Interesting projects.
  • Engineers are encouraged to own projects from design to implementation (high degree of ownership).
Cons

Leadership principles are often used to justify horrendous behavior or terrible ideas. Also, adherence to LPs can be a bit cultish.

Micromanagers abound. Most managers tend to throw employees under the bus to save their own skin and try to eke out every last drop of blood, sweat, and tears from them. See Blind for more horror stories – ALL of them are true.

Dear god, the on-call. Short-term focus means that the code quality is very low, and on-call is a huge overhead since you're trying to deal with an ever-increasing number of bugs and defects.

Pay cap. Base salary gets capped at $160K. And if you're promoted or perform above expectations, incentives only come in during the following year, not the same year.

Advice to Management

Trust your engineers and eliminate or reduce your management layer. The managers are starting to make this Day 1 company into a Day 2 company, like Microsoft.
