Pros

Lots of learning possibilities, and very easy to move internally in the company (sometimes even encouraged after 1-2 years), so plenty of possibilities to touch various technologies.

Cons

On-call is the downside at Amazon, especially at AWS. Certain sub-teams are overloaded by the on-call. Working 24/7 is not fun, and this becomes unsustainable when the team is overloaded with tickets and the on-call takes time from normal work hours as well (in addition to your "normal" on-call rotation).

Advice to Management

You should care about your employees more and take immediate action on on-call when running a team. For example:

  • Hire some SREs for on-call.
  • Hire various teams in different parts of the globe to cover time zones.

24/7 is unsustainable.
