Pros
  • Large customer base
  • Good total compensation
  • Dog-friendly office
  • Good career opportunities if you are in the role you want to end up in (e.g., you are an SDE I and want to become a Principal Engineer)
  • Even with my considerable cons, it is a good place to work to get a good bird's-eye view of many industries
Cons

Teams are required by upper management to place someone on the team on a PIP, even if everyone is a high performer.

Management has an open door policy in name only. When you talk to them about concerns, they say, "I hear you, but you should be doing this differently" rather than actually listening to and internalizing criticism.

On-call is horrendous. There is not enough money in the world to make me go back on-call for Amazon.

There is no room for changing roles. I communicated that I was interested in taking on tasks that traditionally belong to other roles and that I wanted to participate in training for product managers. I was always promised that I would be given opportunities "after the next big project." When I went out of my way and found mentors, my managers shut it down.

Advice to Management

Jeff says that if you're looking at data and making decisions based on that data, but the outcome doesn't favor customers, then you are either looking at the wrong data or reading the data incorrectly.

So many of you are looking just to get promoted to VP or Director that you get lost in the numbers without considering the people behind them.

Do better at treating people like people.
