Amazon intern projects feel very realistic. Interns usually work on a feature that the team will actually use, and the experience of building the feature is very similar to the experience of full-time engineers building product features.
The quality of the internship does seem somewhat team dependent. I've heard stories from other interns who seem to have had a much worse experience, largely due to differences in managers and mentors.

I got unlucky and got a bad interviewer. They wouldn't clarify any of my questions, and it was a very open-ended problem. They seemed disinterested the whole time, so it was already downhill from there.
