Pros
  • Good pay
  • Good reputation in the tech industry
  • Software tools are better than non-tech companies
  • Opportunity to learn a lot, or work in a very deep specialization in tech or business
Cons
  • Negative press about the company, how it treats non-corporate staff, and how managers are told to treat reports, makes it difficult to trust your managers and coworkers.

  • High turnover on teams and low effort invested in maintainability makes tech debt increasingly painful to deal with and reduces morale.

  • Metrics that are tracked and emphasized will make the company look good and stifle criticism, which makes it feel like your lived experience as an employee is less valuable and makes you trust the company less.

  • Responsibilities are much higher as compared to other software engineer jobs, which can be positive or negative depending on your goals, but it does take up more time and makes for a worse quality of life.

  • Little emphasis on mentorship or collaboration, which can stunt the long-term growth of early-career employees within the company.

  • Compensation is designed to inflate a number, and the tradeoff is worse benefits compared to other tech companies.

Advice to Management

Invest more in employee quality of life and focus on improving the company's reputation as an employer.
