Pros
  • Work experience is excellent, with exposure to many different technologies.
  • Amazon Web Services is a technology leader in some fields, which makes working on some of the web services projects extremely interesting.
  • There are some excellent managers and team leaders at Amazon, with great insight into the process of software development.
  • Amazon has a higher hiring bar than much of the industry, which ensures that most (but not all) employees are competent and good at their jobs.
Cons
  • Management is cheap when allocating equipment like desktops to developers.
  • The company does not sufficiently support a good work/life balance and has no problem requiring you to routinely answer calls and tickets in your free time.
Advice to Management

The software development process at Amazon is inefficient. Small changes to the way developers are supported would lead to a large increase in productivity and software quality. Most of the issues are small and could be addressed by allocating a small amount of money to development teams to improve their environment.
