Pros

Despite the stories, work-life balance is reasonable. You learn to be a good engineer. Even as an SDEI, I gained good system design experience by owning a major feature.

There are interesting and challenging problems. It's easy to switch teams, and there are lots of opportunities.

Cons

Projects can be cancelled or postponed after a lot of effort has been put into them. Sometimes there are dry spells, and sometimes they are backed up with tons to do.

Projects can be demanding. I had great performance reviews for 4 years, but with a new team where I wasn't meeting the manager's expectations, I was soon put on a dev plan and ended up leaving shortly after.
