Customer obsession, decent compensation, working backwards from the customer, and good intentions.
"A company of explorers, not conquerors," "the best place in the world to fail," and "a place where builders can build."
Teams are fairly autonomous. They are upfront about their leadership principles. (If they seem silly to you, Amazon is probably not a good fit for you, in my opinion.)
Empathy is not part of the culture. Employees are locked in for 1 year if given a signing bonus and 2 years if relocated. The company lacks a design culture, has above-average bureaucracy and politics, and offers a poor developer experience. There is a default to secrecy, isolation from the development community, and little open-source contribution. Internal tools are poor. The organization is top-down with many layers of managers. Because teams are fairly autonomous, some teams are very toxic. There is an above-average desperation to hire, so some managers will not be honest about the situation to candidates.
Follow through with “a company of explorers, not conquerors,” “the best place in the world to fail,” and “a place where builders can build.” Improve the developer experience, contribute to open source, and be part of the development community. Shed some layers of management. Build off of the customer obsession to create a more empathetic culture. Be on alert; lots of bad hires are happening.
