Pros

Other developers on my team are really smart.

Other developers on the team socialize and commiserate about how awful it is.

Working for a company that tries to treat its customers well.

Cons
  • Completely disrespectful management with no people skills who think they can develop this project faster and better than anyone on your team and have no interest in listening to anything you say.

  • What do you mean you have a life outside of the office??? (On-call rotation; completely unrealistic schedules for completing work items; expectations that you will work late, on weekends, and on holidays. I asked to take one day off in 3 weeks, I was told "No". A week later, my manager goes on a 10-day holiday.)

  • Frustrating development tools and environments; non-industry standard, outdated documentation.

Advice to Management

DO pretend engineers are people, with their own strengths, interests, and lives.

DO NOT make a person who doesn't know how to interact with people a manager.

Recognize the following: You want to hire a lot of engineers and have a high hiring bar, but you don't care about retaining any of the ones you have. There's an extremely high turnover rate, which you need to recognize as a problem of company culture and not just the people who left.
