  • Fast-paced work environment
  • New offices are extremely nice
Cons

Non-health benefits are pretty "frugal".

Archaic internal tools exist for developers.

It takes a while for the company to change, negatively impacting things like job description rewrites and more widely supported industry standards.

Work-life balance has become the exception, not the rule.

To "survive" at Amazon, you either need to be perfect or you need to fly under the radar.

Old-timers say the best way to "succeed long-term" at Amazon is to not trust your manager and fly under the radar until it suits you and you know it won't come back on you.

Advice to Management

Don't secretly stack rank your employees and ask your managers to "cull the herd" as part of your yearly reviews for them. Just be open and honest about it, and you wouldn't have to worry about people suing you.

Be honest about the "Dev List" and tell employees that they can move teams ONLY if they are not trying to move due to a toxic team environment. Managers can keep you from moving to other teams, so you'd better have a good manager and a perfect relationship with them.

Invest in coaching your managers to be better managers, and don't just insist that the "problem areas" are the non-management only.
