Software Developer Interview Experience

Process

I applied for a Siri/iCloud software developer position in Seattle but was matched to a recruiter in Cupertino hiring full-stack developers.

Before I was given an interview, the recruiter spoke with me over the phone. He believed I could move forward and asked me to expect a technical interview.

On the day of the interview, instead of a technical interview, the manager of the recruiter called me. He informed me that the interview would be mostly non-technical questions. He spent 20 minutes asking me about my past experience since my undergraduate degree, which was 15 years ago.

He challenged my decision to choose my undergraduate major and then asked why I took the next step for every single change.

I understand they are supposed to learn about my experience, but the questions he asked made me uncomfortable. I don't feel those were the most important things he should have learned about me either.

He lastly asked why I chose his team at Apple. I had not applied for the team but was matched incorrectly. Neither the location nor the skills were a match.

When he realized my skill set was not what they were looking for, he became very impatient, told me he had run out of time, and ended the call.

Naturally, they declined me. The whole process was a mess from the start.
