I had a screen-sharing first round, where I was given a problem to write a PeekIterator in Java. Based on that, I was called for an onsite interview, which consisted of four rounds.
Inexperienced interviewers were sent to conduct the interviews. I was surprised that such a well-known company would send inexperienced people for interviews. One interviewer, despite having only 5 years of experience, treated the interview as an opportunity to show how much more he knew than someone with 11 years of experience.
I wrote back to HR and the HR head with this feedback. If Apple is not a "sick company," they should surely not allow this person to conduct any further interview processes until they are trained.
Q. Peeking Iterator Implementation in Java (this was the first round over the phone with screen sharing).
Onsite: First Round (by Hiring Manager): Q1: Design a Google Maps-like application. Since this role was for the Apple Maps team, there was a lot of grilling on design and approach.
Second Round: Q1: Write an algorithm to find one local minimum. Example: {0, 1, 5, -1, 6}. This can have a local minimum of 0 or -1. A local minimum is one where the right and left elements are lower than the current element. In the case of 0, since the right neighbor doesn't exist, only look at the left.
Q2: Design a service to shorten URLs, like Google does.
Third Round: Q1: Write an algorithm for Fibonacci. Q2: Design an Elevator System. There was a lot of grilling on design approach and considerations/assumptions.
Fourth Round: Q1: Design a web service for finding the shortest route. Q2: Design a web service to find all positions within a given radius (x) of a specified location.
