Pros

Lots of really smart engineers, many Fortune clients/money, pseudo-startup culture.

Mostly friendly people, reasonable compensation and benefits. Good place to work if you like to join social clubs for various things or just hang out at bars after work. Lots of free food, fun activities, and company events, woo.

All of the engineers, designers, and others I work with regularly have been amazing people to work with, and I hope to keep some as friends when I leave.

All of the VP or above (that I have met) seem to be good, smart, and very motivated people, though perhaps lacking the focus and long-term decision-making skills necessary to thwart competition at their heels.

Cons

Lots of really smart engineers, many Fortune clients/money, pseudo-startup mentality. Again.

Some of the engineers are unapproachable and/or just like to argue about anything and everything. The platform, while transforming, is too far behind the times. The startup mentality causes many decisions to be made quickly without enough thought, and too many rabbits are chased down holes.

Some managers/directors have a good ol' boy mentality, push out those that challenge them, and lie/scheme to have things their way. They cannot be trusted.

Markets will have better options soon. The fact that the legacy platform is so hard to use, and there are probably as many customer success and sales positions as engineer positions, is troubling.

Advice to Management

Hire – better yet, GROW – middle managers that actually reflect the "company values" of transparency and openness. Don't hire them just because they came from Microsoft or some other place you used to work.

Develop your engineering muscle and leadership from within – give real opportunities for advancement to the good people you have.

Promote and RETAIN team players that can collaborate effectively, that still have strong convictions but much more loosely held ones, and that are more open to new ideas. Don't retain – to the contrary, you should release – those that can't, won't, and/or aren't.

Sell, sell, SELL to the highest bidder now, before any IPO.
