Process

The whole process took two months from first contact until decision, mainly because of holidays and logistics.

First, there were two phone screening calls, which I found engaging and refreshing. The questions probed my knowledge and experience with situations close to real-world scenarios, with no gotcha questions.

Even though the position I was applying to was for the Vancouver, BC office, a decision was made to interview me on-site at the San Francisco HQ. The idea was for me to have a feel of the company's culture, which honestly left me favorably impressed after a brief tour and conversations with people. There's truly something special going on here in terms of the culture they managed to create and maintain.

The questions revolved around my past projects, a "how would you implement this" scenario, a coding test (50 minutes with my own laptop), and a code review of said test. Again, no gotcha questions here, so being prepared and going over my own work paid off.

But...

I have a moderate form of Asperger's Syndrome. Among other things, this manifests itself by me missing social cues during conversations (i.e., "lecture mode"), avoidance of eye contact, and intense focus on a single area of interest; you get the idea. On regular days, that’s not a problem since I can allocate some energy to purposely take care of the social side of things. However, during this interview, I devoted 100% of my energy to solving the technical problem in front of me.

And that’s where I failed: communication.

For me, doing both would be like juggling chainsaws and chewing gum at the same time. Some people can do it, but I guess that’s one wall I cannot climb despite my technical competence.

Asana is a very inclusive organization, but I don’t see how they could accommodate people with AS considering their emphasis on interpersonal communication. Of course, I could be wrong.

TLDR; great place/culture, but if you have Asperger's Syndrome, this might not be a good fit for you.
