Pros

Many of the people are top-quality engineers with extremely deep and broad skills.

Cons

AT&T is like many other large corporations. There are many good managers; there are many not-so-good managers. The "party line" seems to be the typical answer; sometimes they just don't want you to know what is going on. There seems to be a real fear of providing honest answers to people's questions. My director, if he doesn't want to answer you, ignores you completely. Health benefits are poor compared to other companies. HR readily acknowledges that AT&T pays below-market salaries.

Advice to Management

Join some of the lower-level team calls and introduce yourself. Emails are so impersonal.

When you join these calls, share your overall game plan with the teams. Ask the hard questions, such as: "Explain my game plan to move this directorate forward."
