Unrealistic Interview for Software Developer

The interview is conducted online by a third party in a video call, lasting 60 minutes and consisting of two parts.

The first 30 minutes include 5 solution design questions for rare scenarios and terminologies that I have never heard of in my 20+ years of software development.

The second part is even crazier: they want you to write fully compilable and testable programs to solve two algorithms, 15 minutes per problem!

Atlassian Work Experiences

A great place to work

Senior Software Engineer • Current Employee

Austin, Texas, United States

Pros: Atlassian sits at a sweet spot between "big tech company", "startup", and "lifestyle company". They are big enough to fund projects that might not pan out, while not being so big that innovation is stifled. Their products are used and (mostly) loved by millions of users, and I feel like the company's vision for the future makes a lot of sense. I hope to work here for many years.

Cons: I work on a smaller project that hasn't been fully integrated into the rest of the platform yet, and the task of doing this migration is a daunting one. But, the leadership in my org does have a vision for how to get there.

Senior Software Engineer • Current Employee

Sydney, Australia

Pros: Full-time work from home

Cons: Performance review twice a year. People can always find what you did not do well.

Lost its way

Senior Software Engineer • Current Employee

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Pros: Pay is competitive in Australia. Offices are nice if you live near one.

Cons: Culture and values are down the drain. Don't believe what they tell you on the careers website. A cut-throat engineering culture, brought on by the CTO, is expected. There's politics and opaque expectations from management, which can be rated as good one day and suddenly bad when it comes to performance reviews. (Stated as someone who has never received bad performance ratings but observes it from their team and wider co-workers).
