The interview process begins with a phone screen, followed by an online test. This test is relatively easy and focuses on algorithmic questions, requiring candidates to answer only two out of the presented problems.
Next is an onsite interview, which comprises three parts: "Coding," "Technical," and "Whiteboard."
The coding interview features a straightforward stack question. The technical interview delves into random questions regarding data structure implementation and the concepts of 'classes' and 'interfaces.' The whiteboard interview involves describing a past project using a whiteboard.
My experience was quite negative. The coding interviewers provided feedback stating my answer was incorrect, despite their during-interview comments of, "Yeah, it looks like you've got it," which was unusual.
During the technical interview, my descriptions of interfaces from a software architecture perspective, rather than a layman's, seemed to displease the interviewers, leading to a communication breakdown. However, they labeled this as having "a technical knowledge gap." This is a peculiar criticism, given my demonstrable Java experience in building Android games, utilizing various data structures and efficient algorithms while maintaining sound architecture.
The whiteboard interview was the most disappointing. The two interviewers appeared disengaged throughout the session. I presented a highly technical distributed computing project and repeatedly asked them to interrupt if I was unclear, ensuring they could follow along. Their feedback was that my project wasn't "technical" enough due to the absence of a UI or customer-facing requirements, which is an absurd assessment. Notably, they had not specified what they were looking for in the whiteboard interview.
My recommendation to Atlassian is to ensure interviewers are genuinely engaged and provide constructive, well-reasoned criticism, rather than delivering nonsensical feedback (especially the claim that a project lacked technical depth due to its lack of a UI!).
