Software Engineer In Test Interview Experience - San Francisco, California

Process

I learned about this position on Glassdoor and applied through the Autodesk careers site. A week later, I received a call from the recruiter. Three days after that, I was contacted for a first-round technical phone interview. A week later, I was asked for another technical phone interview. The recruiter then informed me that they wanted me to come in for an onsite interview, which was scheduled for four and a half hours.

For an Automation QA position, the interview panel consisted of one Senior Development Manager, one Architect, and one Principal Engineer. Notably, no questions were asked about QA processes or automation processes. I found myself wondering what position I was being interviewed for, and if I was expected to write code for spacecraft design.

Some of the questions I was asked included:

  • Write a program to find the distance between a circle and a square on a drawing board.
  • Write a program to print all the nodes of a binary tree.
  • Determine the Big O notation of a nested loop.
  • What XML request is sent when a website is called?
  • What are the detailed parameters sent in the URL, header, and body?

It felt as though they had already decided to hire someone, and were calling other candidates primarily to satisfy management or to demonstrate a selection from multiple applicants for formality's sake. This seemed to be a process of rejection rather than selection. I am unsure if this is the standard policy for all similar jobs or if it was specific to my case because they had already decided not to hire me before the interview, and perhaps had already finalized another candidate.
