My supervisor expected me to work as a senior software developer and find tasks for myself. He didn't know the direction of the company, so I switched between a lot of unfinished tasks.
I don't think it's that hard to tell the middle managers the direction they need to follow and how they should handle interns in terms of assigned tasks.
