Before the interview, I Googled the guy who interviewed me and found that he was a mobile developer who liked people that make him laugh. I applied for JavaScript Engineer.
I thought the interviewer was not only in a field related to the role but also seemed very incompetent. For example, I asked about the day-to-day duties for the role, and the answer was "producing good code, helping others." This kind of answer was also applied to some other questions I asked, which I found totally strange. These kinds of questions should be answered by anyone, or at least "I don't know, but I will find out for you."
I think it just depends on the person who interviews you. It would be better, though, if the person interviewing was qualified enough to do that job.
Most criticisms I see here for Automattic about interviews seem very true.
