Good benefits, lots of experience with distributed work, a wide variety of subject matter areas, and a friendly and helpful culture.
We grew pretty fast in 2021, and the onboarding and support processes haven't all kept up. It felt a little sink-or-swim for the first three months or so.
The existing hiring process is very good at weeding out people who don't naturally fit the profile of the hyperfocused FOSS nerds who created WordPress back in the day.
I suspect increased diversity across all dimensions will be helpful as Automattic continues to grow, but I don't have the formula for how you make that happen.
