Pros: Loved the people, and the snacks! A great company to do an internship with!

Cons: None I can think of. The pay is fairly good, but maybe not as good as some other companies might provide.

Pros: Food is great. The location and building are very good. The pay is okay. There are some real bright people at developer levels.

Cons: This company, though mainly based on the main terminal software, can never become a true software development company. And the worst part is management don't have the vision to see this happening. This is mainly because most of the middle management (team leads) is filled with people having no development experience apart from Bloomberg itself, and that too a lot of non-computer science people. What senior management should understand is that there is a subtle difference between just programming and actual software development. Anyone from any background can learn programming or a language/scripting within a short frame. However, that does not necessarily indicate that they can develop good software. Unfortunately, people here don't understand this. And since the leadership at the technical level has these major lacks, the company is losing key talents at the developer level who are never allowed/given a chance for good development techniques due to the middle layer (mainly because leads have never done that and they just want their juniors to follow what they say). Eventually, good developers will leave the company and go to a better place. No compensation/other benefits can stop this happening, but just the cleanup of the middle layer. That's precisely the reason the software isn't that great enough; it's still in the market because it does not have a real software company as a competitor in Financial Markets. The day isn't far when companies like Google, MS seize this opportunity and bring better financial software to market, which will definitely put the company in a lot of trouble.

Pros: There’s a great sense of community in Engineering, which is separately managed across all products. There are a wide variety of opportunities, from full stack to system-level, performance-critical systems. Open source is widely used these days, and dedicated internal teams offer supported infrastructure. So, you can use this to develop solutions with low operational burden. There are also developer experience teams offering integrated build and deployment tools. If you are a high achiever who takes ownership of problems and is flexible in finding solutions, you can do well. The company will show loyalty and value your contribution. The company is also very active in its philanthropic work. Being privately owned carries benefits like free entry to many museums, galleries, and other sites the company sponsors. There is a healthy internal job market for moving to new teams without leaving the firm.

Cons: Having been a successful company for a long time, some teams have to deal with quite large quantities of legacy code, which takes a very long time to modernize incrementally. Focus on rewarding high performers means low and mediocre performers may well get zero pay rises. Being closely aligned with the finance industry, fully or largely remote work is generally not an option, which may be a deal-breaker for some people. Production deployments typically require at least team leader approval in many teams, or higher approval for non-standard cadences. This helps ensure the stability of the system but can be frustrating for those used to rapid continuous deployment. Engineers are all expected to be on an out-of-hours on-call rota for no extra compensation, although the frequency with which this occurs varies wildly between teams. In some teams, technology choices are limited by running on older platforms.
