They have random layoffs. There is no way to know if you are going to be laid off, so you have to always be on top of your game and keep your options open.
You need to find a way to pay more attention to your direct reports. Management spends a lot of time blowing people off, and they expect their reports to know everything. They will refuse to point you in the right direction. This needs to change.
