Pros

Cool products that you can be proud of. There are only two commercial aircraft makers in the world. One of them is in Seattle, and the other is in France. People can work at any company and build software, but in the US, you can only build large commercial airplanes at Boeing.

Pretty good benefits: low or no-cost health care, good education benefits, and good work-life balance.

Ability to work on unique projects and expand experience.

Cons

Pay is not great.

An extremely large percentage of the workforce is older, which causes a glass ceiling for upward mobility.

There are many layers of bureaucracy, and it takes forever to do anything. The organization is not nimble.

White-collar engineers are required to be in the Union.

You can get stuck in one career field if you are not careful. Some management is very narrow-minded in their approach to careers.

Advice to Management

Start developing future leaders and make opportunities for advancement.

Encourage and make opportunities for movement around the company and in different career fields, not just when someone becomes a VP. This will make our leaders more rounded.

Pay high performers better.
