Pros

Great benefits. Decent compensation. Good tuition reimbursement. Fantastic work-life balance (you really don't even have to work). Great vacation perks. Time off at the end of the year. It is like a resort.

Cons

Work is not relevant or challenging. You will be working on languages and systems from yesteryear.

On the defense side, it is top-heavy, so if you are mid-career, you have very little choice but to leave in order to get ahead.

Many people do nothing and figure out a way to make it their career. Frequently, people sit at their desks and surf all day. I know of entire groups that do next to nothing and waste taxpayer dollars. I have seen people sleep at their desks all day for years on end waiting for retirement, and other young individuals that figure out the system and don't work a full shift. Work is overstated, and the schedules are laughable in the amount of slop that is built into them.

There is no concept of goals and really no accountability, leading to a culture where people don't work harder.

Advice to Management

I think management is working on skills assessment, but it is just a slow process.

Get rid of middle management and consider promoting some younger people who show potential.

Make promotions not solely on years of service, because this demotivates many engineers.

Give people more challenging assignments corresponding with their aptitude, as it stands everyone 1, 2, 3, and 4 gets around the same difficulty in work.
