Pros
  • Decent salary.
  • Free catering.
  • High ownership of features and projects.
  • Possible exposure to many different technologies.
  • Colleagues who are talented and helpful.
Cons
  • It can be hard to promote.
  • There are long working hours, depending on the team.
  • There is no WFH, which depends on the organization and team.
  • Performance reviews are getting strict recently. You can get PIPed (laid off) for slightly underperforming or production issues.
  • Some teams can be very business-oriented, and you do not learn much technically.
  • There is tech debt, a messy code base, bad coding standards, and poor design, which are team- and org-dependent.
  • There are very unrealistic feature delivery timelines, forcing you to do overtime and work over the weekends.
  • It can be bad pay per hour-wise due to excessive overtime.
  • Meetings and docs are in Chinese. You don’t have to speak good Chinese, but if you don’t listen well, you can miss out on a lot of details. This makes your project a lot harder, as much time is needed for clarification and figuring things out.
  • Mentorship might be limited due to team dynamics or how busy they are.
