Software Engineer Interview Experience

Process

Applied online. The total process took about one month. It was supposedly a three-round/stage process.

The first two rounds weren't from official "@capgemini.com" emails, so I was skeptical from the start.

Round 1 Online assessment - 50% or higher to pass.

  • I had technical difficulties so I couldn't even perform the assessment.
  • I attempted communication with technical support but received no response.
  • I did not expect to "progress" to the next interview stage.

Round 2 Strengths assessment - comprised of three sections:

  1. General "problem-solving" questions (multiple choice)
  2. OOP and DS/Alg questions (multiple choice)
  3. Two coding challenges

Round 3 Final video interview - total time 1 hour - five sections:

  1. Introductions
  2. Core programming/OOP concept questions
  3. Present a personal project
  4. "Live coding"
  5. Questions
  • The interview placed too much emphasis on section 2. Approximately 30+ minutes were allocated to trivia knowledge questions, the kind of material you wouldn't normally memorize or would typically check documentation or perform a quick Google search for. It felt more like a university test, prioritizing memorizing knowledge over checking problem-solving capabilities. Questions were asked based on the languages listed on my resume.
  • Less than 10 minutes total was spent on section 4 ("live coding"). This involved opening an IDE locally (or online) and writing code based on the interviewer's prompt. The interviewer had poor explanations, so most of the time was spent trying to understand the prompt.

Questions

Round 2

Strengths Assessment

Q1) Find the length l of a right-angled triangle if you are given two sides h and b.

Q2) Two numbers A and B are given. Write a program to print their whole squares for A and B.

Round 3

Core Programming / OOP Concept Questions

  • What are the four pillars of OOP?
  • What's the difference between a class and an object?
  • In Java, what's the difference between Final, Finally, and Finalize?
  • What does a constructor do, in Java?
  • In JavaScript, what's the difference between var and let?

Live Coding

  • You are given an array of numbers. Ask the user for a number input. Input will be treated as an index for the given array. Output the numbers from the given array up to the user's input index.
