You can move ahead if you stay visible. Everything depends on the project you are in. You might have to do no work and still manage to move ahead or be genuinely successful. This is good for people with more experience and in senior positions, but not great for a fresher.
Lots of politics. I have seen people going ahead by behaving like a PA to their managers or simply begging to be promoted.
Give people more chances to show you their best work. Don't give better incentives to people who have been there longer as opposed to people who are ready to perform better.
