Data Engineer Interview Experience - Richmond, Virginia

Process

A recruiter from Capital One contacted me. Following that, a phone interview was arranged with the team leader.

Two days later, I was informed that an on-site interview (a "power day") would be scheduled.

The on-site interview consisted of four separate one-on-one sessions: one technical, one behavioral, and two job-fit interviews.

I did not find the interviews to be difficult. However, during the conversations with the interviewers, I realized that none of them actually worked with or in the team for which I applied. The manager of the team was also not involved in the interview process. This leads me to believe their interview process may have been inappropriate.

It seemed clear that the interviewers in each of the job-fit sessions (both software engineers) were unaware I was interviewing for a data engineer position, as they appeared surprised when I mentioned it. They may have mistakenly assumed I was applying for a software engineer role.

What was particularly frustrating was that the manager had stated during the phone interview that business background was trivial for this position. Yet, this seemed to be the reason my application was rejected. One piece of feedback indicated they felt I was more like a software engineer than a data engineer. I believe this is accurate, as I am an experienced software engineer seeking a career change to data engineering. I do not understand what the issue is with that.

I received a rejection call from the recruiter two days later.

On a separate note, while the entire on-site interview experience was quite unusual, the recruiter was exceptional. She was highly knowledgeable and skilled in her role.
