Software Engineer Interview Experience - Baltimore, Maryland

Process

I applied through the university and had an on-campus interview. It consisted of three 45-minute interviews:

  • 1 technical
  • 1 case
  • 1 behavioral

They all went pretty smoothly, and the interviewers were very nice and happy to answer any questions I had.

The technical interview involved textbook data structures questions, specifically with strings and linked lists. These were really basic ones, similar to what you'd find in "Cracking the Coding Interview." I also had some Object-Oriented Programming design questions.

The case interview was a little rocky. I understood what the interviewer was saying, and I could see the solution, but I had a slightly hard time getting the interviewer on the same page as me. However, we eventually got there.

For the behavioral interview, I highly recommend preparing some anecdotes in the SAR format (Situation, Action, Result). The interviewer literally recorded each part separately and explicitly told me to format my answers like that.

Questions

Talk about a time you explained something technical to someone non-technical.
