Process

I applied online and received an invitation for an in-person final interview at their McLean, VA location.

I interviewed in December 2019. The interview lasted four hours and consisted of three parts:

  • A behavioral interview
  • A technical interview
  • A "case study" interview, which involved answering questions about a scenario where Capital One merged with a digital bank and included debugging code.

The interview also included lunch with employees, who were mostly recent graduates. They discussed their experiences working for Capital One. The session concluded with a tour of the office and facilities.

My technical interview was first, followed by the behavioral, and then the case study interview.

Overall, the interviews were not overly difficult.

I received a rejection one to two days later.

Questions

Deep copy a linked list where each node has a random pointer pointing to any other node in the list.

Design a credit/debit card system and describe how transactions would be stored so they could be displayed in chronological order.

Given a list of strings and a list of letters, determine if the list of strings follows the same pattern as the list of letters. (Every string is associated with a unique letter; do the strings in the first list match up with their associated letters in the other list?)

Give a time when you had to explain something technical to a non-technical person.

What project are you most proud of?

Tell us about a time when you learned something on your own.

Capital One is planning to merge with a digital bank. What are the advantages/disadvantages of merging with a digital bank?

Debugging code, mostly a bunch of if statements: find a way to reduce the amount of conditional statements made.
