The performance review culture is pretty nasty and unkind, and people, even if they don't mean to, end up being really sneaky as a result. Several months of weekly 1:1s, constantly seeking (and not receiving) actionable feedback on my performance, turned into a very abrupt "you're not meeting benchmarks."
