Pros

You can work on some newer technologies like AWS and big data. There is a big focus on open-source technologies like Linux in tandem with AWS.

Cons
  1. The deadlines are tight, and expectations are very high compared to other employees if you work as a contractor.

  2. Some departments, like Card Fraud, fire contractors for a slight mistake or a single lapse in performance without giving a day's notice. I have seen managers take away laptops from contractors' desks the same day they decide to fire them.

  3. Capital One will ban you for a lifetime from reapplying to any of its projects once HR deems you unfit due to performance reasons.

  4. Contractors are kept away from most extracurricular activities, non-profit initiatives, and department-level meetings. They are also not allowed to use campus facilities like the gym.

  5. Contractors are unaware of furloughs when they join the company, which are forced leaves they are supposed to take at year-end.

  6. The managers are insensitive towards the visa status of temporary workers and how their impulsive decisions affect them and their families.

Advice to Management

Treat temporary workers on par with other employees of your company.

Give feedback and two weeks' notice before firing contractors.

Do not blacklist contractors due to performance reasons so that they can reapply on other projects in the future.

Be mindful that impulse firing of contractors can jeopardize their visa status.
