Front End Developer • Former Employee
Pros: Checkout.com is a growing company developing great products and taking care to get everyone involved in the adventure.
For my first experience in a start-up environment, I learned a ton of things, on both technical and business aspects. I worked along brilliant people and got more and more responsibilities as my experience was scaling. No effort is forgotten at Checkout.com, and everyone gets rewarded for his hard work.
Working here is also an opportunity to meet people from different origins and eat tasteful delights from everywhere around the world. By the way, HR was really helpful and welcoming to get me sorted out with administrative stuff, as I was coming from a foreign country.
There have been a bit of changes in the board and management teams while I was there, but the CEO took his responsibilities and reassured everyone about the future of the company. He is very competent and accessible (even if he is always on the fly), and you can trust him to push his company towards the right direction.
Cons: Despite having a few years behind it, Checkout.com is still a young company, which I think should scale its organization better as more and more people are hired.
Willing to stay a human-sized company is honorable and works well at the beginning, but I can't see how this approach can be efficient in the long term as the company grows to 150+ employees.
While working here, I worked on projects that had good code quality, powered by new tech, and built by good engineers, but the oldest ones were not that good. The development process was being rethought when I left, and I can only see this getting better because poor code will never scale to the ambition of the company. The CTO is highly talented, but he will not be able to get the best out of his developers alone, so I think the company should hire other talented tech leads to help build good software.
